　　每一種語言皆有其非正式的通俗用法，英語自然也不例外。無論是從文化或語言的層面，為了能與外籍人士真正的交流溝通，英語學習者應超越課堂上正統英語形式的限制，放眼無垠的俚語和慣用語世界。

　　英語人士在日常對話、社交場合中都會使用大量的俚語，因而以英語為第二外語的學習者至少要對這些俚語有些概念，知道這些俚語的基本發音。以英語人士的立場來看，若那些英語學習者願意下點功夫學習，以更口語的方式與他們對話，而不光是使用課堂上所學的那些硬繃繃的英語，他們往往會覺得很感激。

　　俚語是文字的不標準用法，它可能是個新創造的字彙，也可能是從其他語言轉化而來的。它是一種是隨性或幽默的文字，流行的時間不是很長，使用起來會表現出幽默感、不那麼禮貌，或達到引人注目的效果。

　　俚語往往只在短期流行，個別用語更是很難通過時間的考驗。一個通俗用語會隨另一個用語的興起而退流行。俚語通常是從某個次級團體的專門用語中出現，例如某個種族、職業、以及其他的次文化團體，像是會嗑藥的人、衝浪、滑板和滑雪板的愛好者、音樂家和大學生等等。

　　在個人所屬的小團體中，用俚語來表達情緒與意見是最簡單的方式，而從各人使用的俚語中，也能區分出他們所屬的社會階級、種族性別。此外俚語也常用來討論一些比較禁忌，像是嗜酒、性器官、性行為和嗑藥等話題。

　　每一種文化皆有自己的俚語，由一些慣用語和片語所構成，本書出版的目的，即為讀者導覽一些英語中最常見常用的俚語。讀者可以把它當作一本教科書，一頁一頁往下讀，也可以把它當作一本參考用的辭典，遇到陌生的用語時拿起來翻閱查詢。

　　全書是以字母順序排列，方便讀者迅速搜尋，每一個俚語都有好幾種意義，而每一種意義都會有參考的例句，讓讀者明白其用法，內容的編排是先列出各俚語的定義，再讓讀者從選擇題中了解正確的用法。

　　每一個俚語的定義後面，都會有一些練習句，請讀者將正確的答案填上，其中某些的答案不只一個，因為一些俚語用法是可以互通的，藉由這些例句練習，讀者可以更清楚了解該如何將這些字眼放在對話中。

　　如果在做完練習後，還是不清楚該如何正確應用，那麼讀者可以繼續閱讀緊接著的文字說明，在說明段落中會更進一步解釋這些俚語的來源，該怎麼運用在句中，以及通常為哪一些特定人士所使用。
